Government provides 150 thousand contos to repair the damage caused by rain on the islands of Fogo and Brava

The information was provided by the Minister of Internal Administration, Paulo Rocha, and the Minister of Infrastructure, Spatial Planning and Housing, Eunice Silva at a press conference to review the Council of Ministers.

The rains that fell in the country at the beginning of September, according to Paulo Rocha, hit the Fogo and Brava regions, causing extensive damage in the municipalities of São Filipe and Santa Catarina do Fogo and on Brava island.

“More specifically, on days six and seven, intense rain caused heavy floods that caused floods, landslides, landslides, wall collapses and the destruction of roads, buildings and other infrastructure”, he highlighted.

Thus, he continued, the Government, after an exhaustive survey of the extent of the damage and its assessment, decided through a resolution of the Council of Ministers and by virtue of the provisions of the basic civil protection law, to declare a situation of calamity in the municipalities of São Filipe and Santa Catarina located on the island of Fogo and also in the municipality of Brava.

Still according to the governor, the declaration of the calamity situation derives from the need to adopt exceptional measures aimed at restoring normal living conditions in areas affected by the rains or affected by their effects, which in this case exceed the capacity of the municipalities.

“With the declaration of a calamity situation, the National Emergency Fund is activated with the purpose of financing the costs of the actions to be developed. Together with the Resolution of the Council of Ministers declaring the calamity situation, the intervention plan is also approved with the prioritization of actions to be financed, a plan prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Spatial Planning in conjunction with the municipalities”, he pointed out. .

For her part, the Minister of Infrastructure, Spatial Planning and Housing, Eunice Silva, made it known that the plan will be implemented by the Government in partnership with the chambers of the three municipalities, stating that the reports contain results of surveys carried out by the local authorities and the government.

Of the 150 thousand contos that are available for interventions to repair the damage on the island, the Government will intervene in municipal works in Santa Catarina do Fogo worth 22 thousand contos, in São Filipe worth 93 thousand contos and on Brava Island 35 thousand contos. thousand tales.

“If in Santa Catarina they are all municipal works, in São Filipe and Brava they are not all municipal works, so in turn, within the apportionments, there will be a separation between what is national work and municipal work, works that will be the chambers to execute, directly, but there are others that will be executed in partnership with the Chamber, Government (…)”, he explained.
