Low pressure systems, known as cyclones, which are named "Cape Verde Hurricanes" because they appear nearby, are being closely monitored due to their significant impact on the Caribbean and American regions. These systems can intensify into hurricanes as they cross the Atlantic towards the west, especially between the months of August and September.

“Sea surface temperatures are near a record high, around 28 degrees Celsius,” as highlighted by the Yale Climate Connections website. This heat provides greater upward energy to tropical waves that originate from the interior of the African continent, contributing to the strengthening of climate systems.

In recent years, Cape Verde has played a crucial role in climate change research, especially through the Mindelo Oceanographic Research Center (OSCM), located on the island of São Vicente. The OSCM has allowed the detailed assessment of the influence of these phenomena on the origin and development of hurricanes, strengthening meteorological forecasting capabilities in the region.

About two weeks ago, Cape Verdean authorities released the seasonal forecast, predicting "above normal" rainfall between July and September and a favorable agricultural season. However, the warning for storms that could evolve into depressions and affect the archipelago until October remains, highlighting the importance of vigilance and preparation for extreme weather events.
