Israel: MNE counters criticism of Cape Verde's abstention vote at the UN and reaffirms that the country is a “staunch defender” of peace
The Minister of Foreign Affairs today refuted criticism about the country's abstention in a United Nations resolution on the conflict between Israel and Hamas and reaffirmed that the archipelago is a “staunch defender” of peace.
This decision by Cape Verde has raised criticism, mainly from the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves and the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV-opposition), who emphasize that a humanitarian ceasefire was at stake to open humanitarian assistance corridors. to civilians.
In this sense, the Government, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rui Figueiredo Soares, reacted today in a press conference, with the purpose of clarifying to public opinion the meaning of Cape Verde's vote.
“(…) the abstention reflects the fact that Cape Verde, like the other 44 countries abstained, was not satisfied with its voted version, as it was too partial, without a single word of condemnation of the violent attacks perpetrated by Hamas”, explained.
He recalled that an important amendment was presented by Canada and that it mentioned the clear responsibility of those who attacked Israel on October 7th, indicating the proximate cause of the ongoing war and the risk of escalation that we are witnessing.
“The promoters of the draft resolution voted against this amendment, making it unfeasible to include it in a text that would be more balanced”, he continued, pointing out that 88 countries from all continents, including Cape Verde, voted in favor of this amendment which, he highlighted, was presented by a country with “unquestionable” performance in the humanitarian field, Canada.
This position, he further clarified, is also consistent with the position of the principle of always condemning any and all acts of terrorism, especially those that affect the lives of innocent civilians.
“This was the context and reason for the decision to support the amendment presented by Canada, which unfortunately was not approved,” he stated.
He declared that for the Government of Cape Verde it is important that dialogue mechanisms for peace are preserved, that humanitarian aid in this context is reinforced and that the principles of International Humanitarian Law are observed, in strict respect for the Charter of the United Nations and the Geneva Conventions .
Thus, he reaffirmed that Cabo Vede is “a staunch defender and promoter of peace, freedom and peaceful coexistence among peoples, in full respect for the Charter of the United Nations and Humanitarian Law”, for which, he assured, “he condemns terrorism on all forms and recognizes the right of the State of Israel to live in peace and security.”
“It is the Government’s responsibility to define and execute foreign policy, and assumes responsibility for its votes. There should be no articulation or consultation to vote one way or not, there is information that we provide in due time”, he said, when asked if there was any prior consultation with the President of the Republic.
In conclusion, the minister assured that the country has acted to facilitate all humanitarian actions in favor of the Palestinian people, namely authorizing the request for overflight and landing of aircraft for this purpose.
