Brava, 1 July 2023 - Last week the former President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, paid a special visit to the Municipal Library of Brava, as part of his ongoing campaign to promote reading and access to knowledge throughout the country. The library, located in the heart of the city, received the former president with enthusiasm and gratitude.
During the visit, former president Fonseca was received by the library team, made up of dedicated librarians and reading enthusiasts, who presented the facilities and services offered to visitors. The former president had the opportunity to get to know the diverse collection of books, magazines and periodicals, as well as the digital resources available for research and learning.
In a post on social networks, the president highlighted the importance of reading as a fundamental tool for individual development and the progress of society. He emphasized the need to encourage the habit of reading from childhood in order to broaden horizons, develop critical thinking skills and stimulate creativity.
Fonseca said that he had offered some of his works, following other offers when he was President of the Republic. “The municipal library has an interesting content, although unbalanced, but it needs organization, trained staff and practices to encourage reading, frequenting that space which is very pleasant, well located and beautiful (former home of the brave poet Rodrigo Peres) ", he wrote.
During the visit, Jorge Carlos Fonseca interacted with people in the library, talking about their favorite books and sharing personal stories of how reading has shaped their lives. He encouraged those present to explore the vast universe of literature, offering reading suggestions and emphasizing the importance of equal access to knowledge for all Cape Verdean citizens.
Jorge Carlos Fonseca’s visit to the Brava Municipal Library was part of the program for his stay in Brava during the São João festivities, where he ended up “taking the flag” as a partygoer in 2024.
With this visit, the former president reinforced his commitment to the promotion of reading and the dissemination of knowledge in Cape Verde, recognizing the vital role that libraries play in building an informed, critical and prosperous society.
