The President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, will be received by Pope Francis next Saturday, the 16th, at the Vatican, in what will be the second meeting between the two Heads of State, the first taking place in 2013.
“I will have the privilege of meeting His Holiness Pope Francis (…), Head of State of the Vatican City and Head of the Catholic Church, on the 16th of this month, at ten o'clock, in the Vatican”, announced Jorge Carlos Fonseca in his Facebook social network page.
At the meeting, the Cape Verdean President stated that he will have the opportunity to exchange views with Pope Francis on some matters that are of interest to relations between Cape Verde and the Holy See, “but, above all, to convey to him the deep aspirations of the vast majority of Cape Verdeans who are part of the Catholic community of Cape Verde, if not the national community”.
On the same day, and immediately after the meeting with the Supreme Pontiff, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, he will, as he said, meet with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican.
In June 2013, Cape Verde and the Holy See signed the Concordat, an international legal instrument, through which the Cape Verdean State recognizes the legal personality of the Catholic Church, as well as certain privileges and benefits, all compatible with the provisions of the country's Constitution. .
