The Civil Movement for Responsible Communities (MCCR) addressed an open letter to the mayor of Brava. At issue is the alleged burning of dogs.

In the letter, shared with the media, the movement expresses concern about the canine overpopulation across the country and recognizes its harmful effects, but repudiates what it calls “serious atrocities” committed against dogs and says that the elimination without an effective public policy does not solve the problem.

“Over the centuries, dogs have been periodically poisoned by municipalities, implementing this measure as a control of the canine population. After the ban on the use of strichnina, municipalities began to use illegal poisons, hanging, beating to death, electrocution and other no less cruel methods, all prohibited and condemned by the World Organization for Animal Health, WHO and FAO, or the European Union. , among other organizations. In fact, the mass killing of dogs that has been practiced for so long has never solved the problem”, points out the movement.

In its letter, the MCCR recalls that, on several occasions, it warned about the ineffectiveness of the massive killing of dogs, as a control of the population, and “strongly condemned” the methods of extreme cruelty.

Methods that, according to him, are widely condemned and described as barbaric by the developed international community, clearly manifested last year 2019 by the Ombudsman for Animals of the Municipality of Lisbon in a letter addressed to the Municipality of Praia.

In February 2019, the MCCR presented a national strategy for canine management to the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, which incorporated modern and effective methods for controlling the canine population.

The MCCR is one of the promoters of the National Alliance for the Ethical Management of the Canine and Feline Population, socialized with all municipalities, but half of which, it says, expressed “immediately” interest in joining it.

The letter also reads that “the Order of Veterinary Doctors of Cape Verde also promptly adhered, assuming the principles of management with a human face that is based on the education of the population and the massive sterilization of dogs”.

In view of these facts, the MCCR invites the Municipality of Brava to abandon traditional and cruel methods and join the Alliance, “which will bring various benefits to the municipality, such as sharing experiences, projects and communication materials prepared”.

The letter is signed by the MCCR and the Order of Veterinary Doctors of Cape Verde.
