MpD expresses “repudiation and indignation” at the behavior of the president of the Municipal Assembly of São Filipe

Filipe Santos, in a press conference, also as president of the Regional Political Committee of the MpD in Fogo, said it was “shameful” to frequently watch, in the media, a president of the Municipal Assembly of São Filipe who should be “impartial and arbitrator” showing that he is unaware of his role and how to exercise the presidency of the Municipal Assembly.

“On several levels, it clearly shows that he is gambling and gambling at the same time, violating the regulations of the Municipal Assembly of São Filipe, in article 40, which says that the functions of president of the Municipal Assembly or member of the Board are incompatible with the as a leader of political groups”, he accused.

He also mentioned that what has been seen in São Filipe are two members of the Board, the president and the secretary, party leaders, giving press conferences to “defend the illegalities” of the São Filipe City Council, claiming that it is “ serious attitudes” in a rule of law.

According to Filipe Santos, the president of the Municipal Assembly of São Filipe should be the first to ensure the legality, transparency and supervision of the chamber's actions and to defend the interests of the people of São Filipe.

“He refuses to fulfill his duty of demanding that the São Filipe city council provide the information requested by the elected representatives of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, opposition), who have the right and duty to scrutinize the actions of the municipal executive ”, he added.

In light of these complaints, Filipe Santos considers the attitude of the president of the Municipal Assembly as “an affront to ethics, morals and democracy”, highlighting, on the other hand, that he does not represent the citizens, but rather the interests of his party and of his “friend Nuías Silva”, who together “are leading the municipality of São Filipe into chaos, delay and disgrace”.

The position of the president of the São Filipe Municipal Assembly, he continued, confirmed that president Luís Nunes and the mayor of São Filipe, Nuías Silva, administer the municipality “as if it were private property, without respect for the law, the opposition and by the population that elected them.”

He also reaffirmed that the MpD in Fogo will not remain silent in the face of the situation and that it will continue to denounce and combat this way of governing, which, in its opinion, harms the development of the municipality and the well-being of its residents.

He therefore called on the president of the Municipal Assembly to fulfill his institutional role, to respect political plurality and to guarantee the democratic functioning of the Municipal Assembly of São Filipe, as “if this does not happen he will have to face the political and legal consequences of their actions and omissions”.

“We will no longer tolerate this dictatorship disguised as democracy. The people of São Filipe deserve more and better”, he concluded.
