New scandals in the Presidency of the Republic
Chief of Staff, Jorge Tolentino, buys himself, with the President's consent, a painting for 300 contos
More developments continue to emerge that constitute corruption, or at least a serious conflict of interest, in the Presidency of the Republic. This time, the purchase of a personal painting for the Chief of Staff, for the sum of 300 thousand escudos.
The complaint is from citizen Maika Lobo, in a publication on social media , in which he publishes the note that proves the deal made between Jorge Tolentino and the President, José Maria Neves.
The painting, a work by Bela Duarte, was produced in 2002 and was negotiated by the Presidency on November 10, 2023. The President of the Republic consented to its purchase.
Analysts interviewed by OPAÍS.cv are categorical in stating that although the direct award of a purchase of an art object for the Presidency may be permitted by law in some circumstances, the situation suggests a potential ethical and legal problem, especially in terms of transparency, competition as well as equal opportunities for other visual artists in the country.
