North American Senators Edward Markey and Hakeem Jeffries introduce resolution in honor of Cape Verde's 50 years of independence

U.S. Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass. ) and Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), Democratic Minority Leader in the House of Representatives and the highest-ranking U.S. government official of Cape Verdean descent, introduced a resolution in the Congress recognizing half a century of independence of the Republic of Cape Verde and celebrating the contributions of Cape Verdean Americans to democracy in Cape Verde and the United States.

"Since the 18th century, Cape Verdean Americans have contributed greatly to the rich history of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, New England, and the United States through the whaling industry, commerce, fishing, cranberry farming, entertainment, politics, academia, and much more. more," said Senator Markey. "Massachusetts is honored to be home to the largest Cape Verdean community in the United States. I am immensely proud to represent this community and recognize its achievements. As Cape Verde celebrates half a century of independence this month, we should all celebrate how this small archipelago has become a model of good governance that upholds the principles of freedom and democracy".

"Cape Verde is a leading democracy in Africa with a strong commitment to the rule of law, human rights and democratic values. The nation is in a geopolitically important location and has been a reliable and loyal partner of the United States," said the leader Jeffries. "As one of the only members of Congress with Cape Verdean roots, it is an honor to join Senator Markey in introducing this resolution to mark 50 years of Cape Verde's independence."

In addition to Markey and Jeffries, several other U.S. senators and representatives also signed the resolution, including Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass. ), Jack Reed (DR. I. ), Sheldon Whitehouse (DR. I. ), Peter Welch (D- Vt. ), Gregory Meeks (NY-05), Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Steven Hosford (NV-04), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20), James McGovern (MA -02), Gabe Amo (RI-01), Sara Jacobs (CA-51), Seth Magaziner (RI-02), Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37) and Bill Keating (MA-09).

Several Cape Verdean authorities and representatives of the Cape Verdean community in the United States also expressed support for the resolution, highlighting the historical and cultural importance of ties between the two countries.
