PAICV on Brava Island returns the charge, accusing the Mayor of cronyism and nepotism
Nova Sintra, February 16, 2024 (Bravanews) - The African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) on Brava Island intensified its criticism of the Mayor, Francisco Tavares, accusing him of cronyism, clientelism, nepotism and harmful management . Carlinhos Martins, local leader of PAICV, alleges that Tavares is favoring his compadre, Ideal Louro, with construction contracts without a public tender, in a company that appeared suddenly.
According to Martins, the company in question was created suspiciously, with no previous history in the sector, raising doubts about the transparency of the City Council's hiring processes. He also pointed to the alleged favoring of family and close friends of the President, to the detriment of established local businesses.
In a previous video, Francisco Tavares refuted all the accusations, defending the legality of his actions and highlighting the importance of the works carried out for the development of the island. The situation sparked controversy in the community, with some residents expressing support for the council's management and others demanding a further investigation into PAICV's allegations.
The controversy surrounding PAICV's accusations against the Mayor of Brava, Francisco Tavares, gained new momentum with the release of a video on social media. In the images, Carlinhos Martins, local party leader, reinforces the accusations of cronyism, clientelism, nepotism and harmful management, specifically pointing to the alleged preference given to Ideal Louro, Tavares' crony, in construction contracts.
The video, which is going viral, shows Martins presenting documents and evidence that, according to him, prove irregularities in the management of the City Council. The images have generated heated debate between supporters and critics of the President of the Chamber, with many demanding an immediate investigation by the competent authorities.
So far, Francisco Tavares has not commented specifically on the video, but reiterated his position that all the chamber's actions are in accordance with the law and aim to benefit the population of Brava Island.
Local authorities have not yet commented on the possibility of investigating the allegations made by PAICV.
