The internal elections for the new president of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV-opposition) take place on December 22nd and the XVI Congress is scheduled for January 31st, February 1st and 2nd, 2020.

The announcement was made today by Manuel Inocêncio, spokesman for the meeting of the National Council of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV), which met on the 9th and 10th of November, with the question of the election of the new leadership of the party on the agenda.

“Regarding the electoral process, the direct elections for the party's president were scheduled for December 22 and the holding of the XVI Congress for January 31 and February 1 and 2, 2020, in Praia”, he indicated.

Manuel Inocêncio also advanced that during the National Council meeting it was also defined that the number of delegates for the congress is around 364, stressing that the candidates already know what are the dates that they must present the lists.

Regarding the mayoral agenda, he assured that the party will take stock of the entire preparation process for next year's mayoral elections and eventually define new guidelines for the regional structures of the PAICV.

Manuel Inocêncio explained, on the other hand, that the party's strategy is to prepare itself in the best way possible to improve its representation in municipal power in the country, considering that at the moment the PAICV has only two chambers.

Candidates for party leadership have so far been presented by Janira Hopffer Almada, current leader, and José Sanches, deputy elected on the PAICV lists for the North Santiago constituency and who belongs to the so-called Reflection Group within the PAICV.

The agenda of the national council meeting also included an assessment of the national political situation and the agenda of local authorities for 2020.
