President of Cape Verde Condemns Attack on Former US President

The President of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, strongly condemned the attack against former US President Donald Trump, highlighting the need to repudiate any act of violence in politics and subversion of democratic rules.

The President of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, classified the attack against the former President of the United States, Donald Trump, as "highly deplorable" and reinforced that all acts of violence must be "vehemently condemned".

In a statement issued during his visit to São Tomé and Príncipe, Neves expressed great sadness upon receiving the news of Trump's assassination attempt. "I received the news about the attempted assassination of Mr. Donald Trump with immense disgust," he said. He added that "such an attack constitutes a highly deplorable fact not only for the United States but also for the entire community of Nations committed to democracy and the Democratic Rule of Law."

The Cape Verdean President highlighted the importance of condemning any attempt to subvert democratic rules, especially in electoral contexts, and highlighted the need to repudiate violence in politics. "All attempts to contaminate or subvert the rules of the democratic game, especially in an electoral environment, as well as any and all acts of violence in politics, must be vehemently condemned wherever they occur", he declared.

Neves also wished former President Trump a speedy recovery and expressed solidarity with the current President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the entire American nation. "I express our best wishes for a frank recovery to President Donald Trump and we address to the President of the United States, Mr. Joe Biden, and to the entire American nation the firm solidarity of the people and the Republic of Cape Verde at this time of yet another ordeal for the great democracy American", he concluded.

The condemnation of the attack was also echoed by other community leaders from Portuguese-speaking countries. The President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, stated that the attack "must be vehemently repudiated by all defenders of democracy and dialogue in politics". In Lisbon, the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed his “strongest condemnation” for the attack and called for a firm fight against political violence.
