The President of the Republic made a positive assessment of the three-day State visit to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, believing that the existing cooperation and friendly relationship between the two countries were further strengthened.

José Maria Neves took stock of the visit that took place from the 23rd to the 25th of May, in statements to the Cape Verdean press, stating that it was “a great, unprecedented visit and that, in all respects, distinguishes Cape Verde”.

“The balance is very positive. He had never made such a touching state visit before. A State visit would presume something formal, but it was a visit from a friend, where there was a great communion of ideas and, above all, a great brotherhood”, he stressed.

For José Maria Neves, the way in which Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg was predisposed to accompany every moment of the visit shows “the greatness of this relationship and Luxembourg's commitment to building the best relations with Cape Verde”.

“Relations between Luxembourg and Cape Verde are strengthened, because they are no longer just political relations and only cooperation, to reach levels of complicity, authenticity and, above all, focused on building futures”, he underlined.

During the three-day State visit to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, at the invitation of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, José Maria Neves was accompanied by a government, municipal and business delegation, which included, among others, the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration, Rui de Figueiredo Soares, of Communities, Jorge Santos, and of Industry, Commerce and Energy, Alexandre Monteiro.

The visit of the President of the Republic to Luxembourg took place at a time when the two countries are celebrating 30 years of cooperation relations, which began in the late 1980s, which led to the signing of the Bilateral General Agreement on Cooperation for Development in 1990's.

In Luxembourg, José Maria Neves, accompanied by the first lady, Débora Carvalho, had a meeting with the Grand Duke Henri, an audience with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, who was also decorated, with the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and the President of the Chamber of Deputies.
