The head of state was speaking to journalists after laying a wreath at the Amílcar Cabral memorial, located in Largo da Várzea, in Cidade da Praia, a ritual that takes place every year on January 20, the date on which another anniversary is celebrated. of his death and National Heroes' Day.
José Maria Neves recalled that throughout its history, Cape Verde has experienced moments of great heroism and mentioned several names of Cape Verdeans who “fought enormously, with great heroism”, for a land with “more dignity and more justice”, and for for Cape Verdeans to live better, including Eugênio Tavares Loff de Vasconcelos, Pedro Cardoso and Abílio de Macedo.
“We had charitable people, poets, writers, anonymous women and men who also managed with great heroism to give voice to Cape Verde and Cape Verdeans, demanding more and better living conditions for all Cape Verdeans”, he pointed out.
“And Cabral... today, January 20, the day he was assassinated in the struggle for independence, for more dignity... Cabral ends up synthesizing all the heroic spirit of Cape Verde. So it's good that we can celebrate this day as a symbol, because today, in addition to the National Heroes' Day, is the day of nationality”, he added.
For José Maria Neves, symbolically, Cape Verde was reborn with Cabral, as a political community capable of leading its own destiny.
“I would like to appeal to all Cape Verdean men and women that we actually celebrate this day of national and national heroes with great dignity”, he said.
Amílcar Cabral was born on September 12, 1924 and next year will be the centenary of his birth.

On January 20, 1973, Amílcar Cabral was assassinated in Conakry, at a time when he was waging an armed struggle against the Portuguese army, and 61 years later, he remains a central figure in the history of Africa, especially that of Cape Verde and from Guinea-Bissau.
