Raquel, Joana and Dilma the true visionaries

In celebration of Women's Day and Cape Verdean women in March, the Desporto Brava website is paying special tribute to three women who played key roles in the development of soccer on Brava Island: Raquel Rodrigues, Joana Rodrigues and Dilma Miranda. These women, who marked the history of local sport, were pioneers and courageous when they took over the management of Académica da Brava in the 1990s, challenging norms and facing the reality of a predominantly male sport.

Raquel, Joana and Dilma the true visionaries
Raquel, Joana and Dilma the true visionaries
Raquel, Joana and Dilma were true visionaries, leading an all-female management of the club. With boldness and determination, they took the reins of Académica, which they renamed "Ajax", and became a benchmark for resilience and competence. At a time when women rarely held leadership positions in soccer, these warriors showed that passion for sport and love for their land are unbeatable forces.
Joana Rodrigues, a passionate soccer fan, was known for her vibrant energy that made the old Pedro Correia Stadium shake. Her presence alongside Dilma, Raquel, Terezibha, Loy di Bia and so many other women formed a fearsome claque, whose chants and unconditional support created a unique atmosphere. The team, affectionately called "MICA", gained strength and confidence thanks to the energy of these women who turned the stadium into a stage of joy and fervor. They were a true source of inspiration for the players and a motivating force that feared no opponent, regardless of the size of the challenge.
Today, the Desporto Brava website is honored to pay this small tribute to these warrior women who, with courage and perseverance, gave their best for Brava soccer. They not only played leading roles, but also showed that the limit was only in the sky, and that willpower and commitment to sport were unbreakable.
Raquel, Joana and Dilma are living examples of overcoming and dedication. They left everything for their team and for local soccer, and today, the sport of Ilha Brava is richer and more vibrant thanks to the legacy of these women. We thank each and every one of them from the bottom of our hearts for everything they have done and continue to do for our sport. You are true warriors, and your determination is an inspiration to all future generations.
Women who dared, women who loved soccer, women who, with their fighting spirit and commitment, changed the history of Brava. May the example of Raquel, Joana and Dilma inspire other women to follow in their footsteps and break down barriers in all areas of life. Thank you very much for everything!
Desporto Brava bringing you the best in sport.
