UN Resident Coordinator in Cape Verde Visits "Ilha das Flores" to Promote Sustainable Development
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cape Verde, Patricia Portela de Souza, visited Ilha da Brava to better understand the local reality and reinforce sustainable development actions. During the visit, she met with local authorities and the population, discussing challenges such as water quality and exploring development projects.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cape Verde, Patricia Portela de Souza, is visiting Brava Island, known as "Ilha das Flores". This visit is part of its agenda of proximity to municipalities, communities and local people, with the aim of better understanding the local reality, listening to the needs of the population and reinforcing UN actions to support local development.
During her visit, Patrícia de Souza met with the mayor of Brava, Dr. Francisco Tavares, and the Delegate of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, Dr. Hermelindo Barros. Discussions addressed important challenges facing the island, such as water scarcity and quality due to high levels of fluoride, as well as transport limitations. In addition to addressing these challenges, the coordinator also explored the island's potential to promote sustainable development focused on people.
Patrícia de Souza not only maintained dialogues with local authorities, but also spoke to the population and visited several projects that promote local development. Among the places visited are the Nova Sintra fish market, the Lomba Tatum Fishing Cooperative, the fish processing center, the cable car for transporting fish, the Campo de Baixo cheese cooperative and the Base Health Unit .
The visit reflects the UN's commitment to contributing to the reduction of regional asymmetries and the promotion of human rights, with the aim of leaving no one behind.
