The Seawater Desalination Station – Brava (EDAM-BR) project began work on installing the water pipeline from the seawater reservoir last February. Head Avenida to Santa Bárbara, and since then, the circulation of people and cars has been restricted on Rua da Cultura.
Speaking to Inforpress, the owner of a hotel located on that street, António de Pina, highlighted that water is necessary on Brava Island, but highlighted that the pace at which the work is being carried out is very slow and poorly organized.
“I think this work should be better organized, since they opened the trench and closed it, however, until now they have not paved the places where the pipes were placed. The work is carried out by a private company, but the city council should supervise the works, so that there is better control”, he stressed.
Tó Demol, as he is known by the people of Brava, also highlighted that his hotel has been suffering from dust for days and is unable to receive customers, if they come to his establishment.
“Water is necessary, since we have a severe lack of water on this island, but what I am complaining about is the way in which the work is being coordinated. I am also a contractor in this municipality and when my team is carrying out work, I face a lot of pressure from the municipality, so why is this private company not being monitored?”, he asked.
António Paiva, who also lives on this street, shares the same opinion about the importance of water, however, he considered that the work should be better organized.
“We are aware that they will dig from our street to the water reservoir in Santa Bárbara to place the pipe, but I think that as the pipe is placed and the trench is closed, the right thing to do would be to start immediately with the paving and not leave it until the work is completely finished” he suggested.
In this situation, he stated that it has been months since he has been able to take construction materials to his house, as it is currently under construction and the street is restricted from the movement of people and cars.
“Of course it is a necessary work for the common good of the entire population, but it needs to be done and fixed. There are people who had already painted their houses, however with the excess dirt that is being left behind, it is dirtying the paintings and then there is no one to take responsibility”, he concluded.
For his part, the president of Brava City Council, Francisco Tavares reacted by explaining that the population must understand the situation, as it is not a technical and simple task to carry out, but assured that the company is doing its utmost to minimize inconvenience. .
“We are already aware of the complaints, mainly the requirements for paving some sections that already have new pipes, but the technical work demands that this be the case, taking into account that if there is a need to re-open some junction points of piping, the procedure would be to dig again.
In this sense, the mayor highlighted that it is necessary to build at least 500 meters of pipeline, and only then carry out the first water pressure tests, which is why the paving process has not started.
“After hearing complaints from residents, we have already visited the site and we can see that there may be movement of cars and people, and in some identified places, there is a need to leave some holes open”, he stressed.
Therefore, Francisco Tavares appealed to the residents and population of Brava for understanding, guaranteeing that the work will solve one of the municipality's main problems, but stressed that it is normal for people to experience some discomfort for a period of time and that the gain will then be justifiable. .
