According to information gathered by Inforpress at the scene, the ship was on the Sal/São Nicolau route, transporting gravel and a truck, among other materials, for the works taking place at the Preguiça aerodrome and on the road linking Jucalinho to Carriçal.
The 19 crew members and one passenger, according to information made public, were rescued by local fishermen (Preguiça) and are staying at the Maiamona sports pavilion in Ribeira Brava.
"Nho Padre Benjamim" is a 90 x 18 meter cabotage ship, with capacity for 319 containers, as well as a low draft to facilitate loading and unloading operations.
The German-built ship was acquired in 2015, when it was 35 years old, by the company Lusolines, which belongs to the Agrícola Ilha Verde group "in perfect operating and safety conditions, thanks to constant and up-to-date maintenance, as stressed by representatives of the company that owns the ship".
