Situation of the Brava Island Census Commission worries PAICV/Brava
City of Nova Sintra, July 5, 2024 (Bravanews) - For more than a decade without internal elections, the Ilha Brava Census Commission faces an anomalous situation, currently operating with just one member, according to a report from a PAICV representative ( African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde) on the island. With the electoral calendar approaching, the situation has generated significant concerns among members of this political party, which is in opposition.
Brava Island has been affected by the lack of updating and proper functioning of the Census Commission, a crucial body for organizing and holding democratic elections. According to local sources, the last internal electoral process took place more than ten years ago, leaving the commission practically inactive since then.
The PAICV member who reported the situation highlighted the critical importance of maintaining a fair and transparent electoral process, especially in a period as crucial as the upcoming elections. Concern about democratic representation and citizen participation on Brava Island has been a central issue in local political discussions, with the Tambarina party emphasizing the urgent need to resolve the crisis in the Census Commission.
Meanwhile, electoral authorities and representatives of other political parties have been urged to investigate and resolve the impasse affecting Brava Island's ability to conduct internal elections in an effective and fair manner, remembering that it is up to the Municipal Assembly, upon proposal from the Municipal Council, elect the new members of the aforementioned Commission. The lack of updated voter registration and the reduced operation of the commission raise serious questions about the integrity of the electoral process on the island, leading observers to call for immediate corrective measures.
When contacted, the Mayor of Brava, a candidate for his succession, said that in truth, the Census Commission operates with two members, (Abel Silva and Matilde Monteiro) due to the emigration of the third member (Raquel Rodrigues).
As the debate intensifies, the expectation is that the competent authorities will take swift and decisive action to ensure that future elections on Brava Island are conducted in accordance with established democratic principles, thereby restoring public confidence in the local electoral system.
