Tragedy in the bay of Fajã D'Água triggers an urgent request for the installation of danger signs
Nova Sintra, November 20, 2023 - A commotion took over the community of Faja D'Agua and several other locations on the island of Brava after a tragic drowning incident in Fajã Água Bay, which occurred at the end of this week. The incident took the life of an immigrant from the island of Fogo who spent part of her vacation on the island of Brava, leaving the community in mourning and prompting immediate action to prevent future similar tragedies.
The victim, identified as Benilde Montrond, lost her life while trying to save her daughter in the bay during a period of rough seas and rising tides. The tragic event highlighted the urgent need for preventive measures to protect the population and visitors who frequent the area.
The residents of Faja D'Agua, together with other residents of the region, are joining forces to request the immediate installation of danger signs along the Faja Água Bay. The idea is to warn people about the risks associated with swimming or going near the water during periods of rough seas or when the tide is rising.
Several community leaders have expressed their concerns and are working together to present a formal petition to local and regional authorities calling for the urgent implementation of these safety measures. They hope that hazard signs can play a crucial role in preventing accidents and raising awareness about the dangers associated with the sea
Local authorities must rethink the issue of access to this region during periods of rough seas, and must act to intensify safety patrols in coastal areas and educational campaigns to inform residents and visitors about safe practices at the seaside, as well as training of lifeguards that must be on the beaches during bathing seasons.
As the community mourns the tragic loss, the hope is that the implementation of these safety measures can provide a safer and more conscious environment, preserving lives and preventing future tragedies in Faja Água Bay and surrounding areas.
