Three people were killed and several others seriously injured after scaffolding collapsed outside a 19-story building on the outskirts of the Swiss city of Lausanne on Friday, authorities said.

The three deceased were construction site workers, in their 30s and 40s, from France, Switzerland and Cape Verde, authorities in the French-speaking canton of Vaud said in a statement. Eight other people were injured in the accident, including four with serious injuries, they said.

Reuters testimony saw dozens of emergency workers and firefighters working at the site at dusk to prevent further collapse and remove a pile of rubble about 10 meters high.

The public prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation, the canton said.
