“Ukrainian Writings” is the newest literary work by Jorge Carlos Fonseca, to be presented this Saturday, 10th, during the “World Literature Festival” which runs from Thursday, 8th, on the most touristic island in the country. The presentation will be in charge of the journalist Joaquim Arena.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca explained to Inforpress that the idea of writing a book about Ukraine came up days after the Russian invasion of that country, therefore, after having left the Presidency of the Republic, and during a lunch with friends in the town of Boca de Coruja, on the island of Santo Antão, where the subject was the dominant topic of conversation.

However, as he explained, despite this motivation and the title itself, “Ukrainian Writings” is not a political manifesto, but a poetic writing.

“It is a literature book that contains poetry, poetic prose, literary chronicles, a mixture of chronicle and diary. Basically, the dominant environment is poetic writing. Now, naturally, the starting point, the background motivation was the Russian invasion of Ukraine”, he clarified.

According to the author, “Escritos Ucranianos” links the conflict to the islands of Cape Verde, being composed of a set of 100 fragments that are interconnected by reference to the conflict.

In the first fragment, JCF talks about “Boca de Ambas as Ribeiras”, a “very beautiful place in Santo Antão with a strange and spectacular name”.

“Representative of the islands in the conflict”

JCF also says that this work is “a kind of representative of the islands in the conflict since on the islands, at the height of the war, people did not say much”.

The 200-page book is scheduled for launch at 6.30 pm, in the city of Santa Maria, on the island of Sal, during the World Literature Festival that started last Thursday, 8.

The presentation will be in charge of the writer and journalist Joaquim Arena and will count on the presence of the editorial director of Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda, the Portuguese publishing house that endorsed the work.
