The President of the Republic defended today that the Cape Verdean community in the US is influential and has a lot of economic strength, and proposed the creation of new levels so that it can make a qualitative contribution to the country's development.
José Maria Neves was speaking during a press conference, in Praia, to talk about his trip to the United States of America (USA) for the first Presidency in the Diaspora, which will take place from March 31 to April 5.
The head of state was “very expectant and optimistic” in mobilizing the diaspora to accelerate Cape Verde's transformation process.
“We want new levels for the contribution of the diaspora to the development of Cape Verde and my ambition is to mobilize this diaspora to accelerate the process of transforming Cape Verde”, said José Maria Neves, noting that Cape Verdeans have had good practices and are represented in all segments of American social life.
He said that the expectation regarding this visit is “very high”, taking into account that it is the largest and oldest community abroad, which is very well represented with a great economic, political and cultural force and will be able to make a qualitative contribution to the development of Cape Verde.
“And it is in this line that we go into this visit with very high expectations and I hope that we manage to fulfill these desideratums”, indicated José Maria Neves, who classified the first presidency in the diaspora as “extraordinarily important” for being a milestone in the exercise of the Presidency of the Republic.
On the other hand, he argued that it is necessary to qualitatively improve the participation of the Cape Verdean diaspora in the overall development process of Cape Verde, that is, to go far beyond financial remittances in order to have remittances of ideas and knowledge.
As he advanced, the Cape Verdean community in the US is a reference of what is wanted for the future of Cape Verde and for the participation of the diaspora in the country's overall development process.
During the first presidency in the diaspora, the highest magistrate of the Nation will be in the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, where he will have the opportunity to meet with university professors, academics, high school students, young entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs to discuss and analyze together ways to promote investment in the archipelago.
“I will be with churches, non-governmental organizations, with associations of Cape Verdeans in various parts of these three states, men of culture, I will visit various undertakings and various Cape Verdean achievements and I will have the opportunity to meet at various times with personalities of the Cape Verdean community,” he added.
The agenda also includes the decoration of several Cape Verdeans who stood out in community life in that country and meetings with state, municipal and federal deputies, mayors, senators, and governors.
