Political Notes: Cape Verde official to build on Harwich connection

HARWICH — Harwich has become a hot spot for political dignitaries this summer.

President Francisco Walter Tavares of the island of Brava in the Republic of Cape Verde will deliver an address at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Harwich Community Center.

State Sen. Viriato “Vinny” deMacedo, R-Plymouth, is a native of Brava and will attend the event along with other members of the region’s legislative delegation. DeMacedo said he’s thrilled about the visit.

Each of the nine habitable islands that make up Cape Verde has a mayoral-type official referred to as “president,” according to deMacedo.

“For a lot of people in this area, there’s a strong connection between Brava and Cape Cod,” deMacedo said. “Harwich has a large Cape Verdean population because so many people from Brava came to Cape Cod to work and they built a life here. It’s great that we can keep that relationship strong.”

The address is being sponsored by the Cape Verdean Heritage Oral History Project. The project’s goal, by recording interviews of Cape Cod residents of Cape Verdean heritage, celebrates and documents the contributions and historical, social and cultural heritage of individual Cape Verdeans.
